      Obv: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA around draped bust of Faustina Jr. right. Rev: COL PRIMA FL AUG CAESAREA around Emperor (Marcus Aurelius?) togate, standing left, holding cornucopia and sacrificing on alter. This is (apparently) the only type minted for Faustina Jr. at Caesarea Maritima. Pleasing earthy patina and well preserved for the issue. Meshorer 42.

      Rome mint. Obv: King Aretas of Nabataea kneeling right beside camel, reins in left hand, presenting olive branch in right. (Circular bankers mark just below branch). “SC” below right. Rev: Jupiter in fast quadriga left, reins in left hand, hurling thunderbolt with right. Scorpion in left field, “CAPT” behind quadriga. This coin type commemorates the surrender of Aretas III, king of the Nabataean Arabs to M. A. Scaurus in 62 BC. This is the first occasion of a moneyer advertising an event from his own career on coinage. (Sear 378).

      Obverse: Bare head of the Consul A. Postumius Albinus. Bankers mark on neck. Reverse: “ALBINU/BRUTI F” in two lines within wreath of corn ears. Born Decimus Junius Brutus, and associating with the Bruti Gens (as Bruti Filus…son of Brutus), he was later adopted into the Postumia Gens and changed his name to Decimus Postumius Albinus. He was destined to become one of the assassins of Caesar on the Ides of March in 44 BC.

Nicely toned, the “edge mark” does not distract from the overall look of this coin. Brutus died in 42 BC.

      Uncertain mint in Spain (perhaps Corduba).  M. Poblicius, legate pro praetore. Obv: Helmeted head of Roma right, bead and reel border. Rev: Hispania or Baetica standing right, shield over back, two transverse spears in left hand, presenting palm with short stem in right to Pompey standing left on large prow. Gnaeus Pompeius, born 79 BC, was the elder son of  Pompey the Great and Mucia. He was executed by Julius Caesar’s troops after the battle of Munda in 45 BC. (ex Bacchus Collection).

Reverse: Pontifical implements: simpulum, aspergillum, secures and apex. A fairly well centered coin with all devices present on the piece. Very desirable coin in this grade. The “bankers mark” is well hidden, and does not distract at all from this lovely, historically important denarius.

    • 42 BC – Lepidus and Octavian – AR Denarius 3.73g – NGC Very Fine 4/5 – 2/5 (Scratches)

      Lepidus as Triumvir (43-36 BC.) Military mint traveling with Lepidus in Italy, November-December 43 BC. Obv: Bare head of Lepidus right. Rev: Bare head of Octavian right. Very rare coin. (ex. Morris Collection).

      A Wily and wealthy nobleman, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus parlayed his position as Julius Caesar’s colleague in the consulships of 46 BC into the role of power broker between the rivals Mark Antony and Octavian after the great dictators murder. He won wide-ranging Triumviral powers in the settlement of 43 BC, but took no part in the campaign against Brutus and Cassius and soon lost influence becoming a “third wheel” in a dyarchy. He helped Octavian defeat Sextus Pompey in 36 BC, but afterward overreached and was easily outmaneuvered by Octavian and stripped of all real powers, retaining only the post of Pontifex Maximus, which he held until his death in 12 BC.

This tessera (token) was minted at Ephesus, the cult center of the Greek world from the Hellenistic period onward. A pseudo-autonomous issue, at around 100 AD, Ephesus was one of the largest cities in Roman Asia. Since there are no discernible translations for the legends, they are generally considered to be a meaningless mystical formula or just a jumble of letters. Some suspect an incantation to bring good luck or ward off disease. Whatever it’s purpose, it is a very unusual and visually appealing piece.
