    • c. 1st Century AD – Ionia, Ephesus – AE Tessera – NGC Extra Fine (light smoothing)

Obv: Stag kneeling left, head reverted, Greek letters in exergue. Rev: Bee seen from above surrounded by Greek lettering. This tessera (token) was minted at Ephesus, the cult center of the Greek world from the Hellenistic period onward. A pseudo-autonomous issue, at around 100 AD, Ephesus was one of the largest cities in Roman Asia. Since there are no discernible translations for the legends, they are generally considered to be a meaningless mystical formula or just a jumble of letters. Some suspect an incantation to bring good luck or ward off disease. Whatever it’s purpose, it is a very unusual and visually appealing piece.
